Thanks to all those that participated in our August 1st Fundraiser and participation in the National Night Out Against Crime at the Knights of Columbus in Lansing. Both events were successful. The Lansing Junior Woman's Club distributed information about domestic violence, prevention of child abuse and bullying. Local shelter information was distributed.          This just in! Your GFWC dues are being used wisely and well. The GFWC Leadership Education And Development Seminar (LEADS) is an important initiative that will positively impact the future of our organization. Instituted by the GFWC Board of Directors in 2001, LEADS identifies and encourages potential leaders at the grassroots level of Federation who can help steer the organization forward into the 21st century.

Carrie Lape, a member of the Lansing Junior Woman's Club, attended the fifth annual LEADS session in conjunction with the 115th GFWC Annual International Convention in Denver, Colorado, in June. Representatives from 44 state federations spent the day discussing a wide range of topics relevant to leadership, and learned in-depth information on the structure, history, and membership benefits of GFWC.

Attendees actively took part in presentations on conflict resolution within organizations and techniques for effective public speaking. During interactive sessions, participants practiced their new mediations skills, and received advice and guidance from a professional public speaking expert.

The 2006 Lansing Junior Woman's Club Family and Friends Team raised $873 (with $90 from our Sucker & Duckie pulls and the sale of the knitted socks donated by Debbie). A few more donations have been mailed directly to ACS since the event, so we should know our grand total after August 31st, the end of their fiscal year. We've raised just about $200 more than last year, so far.

Our team also won the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Calumet City 2006 BEST CAMPSITE Award! They loved our Flamingo's! We had many people ask about flockings and a few about our club! Let's keep our fingers crossed!

The ACS Relay for Life of the Calumet Area had about 28 teams present this year and raised $48,000 for ACS plus to date.

It was fun and exhausting as always. Thanks to all that helped to make this year a success!

Debbie Bach, member of both GFWC Illinois Lansing Woman's Club and GFWC Illinois Lansing Junior Woman's Club and Carrie Lape, member of GFWC Illinois Lansing Junior Woman's Club, were two of more than 1,000 women attending the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) 115th annual international convention June 8-13th in Denver, Colorado. In addition to participating in business sessions, committee meetings and workshops such as Domestic Violence and Empowering Women, both attendees heard a keynote address by Alison Levine, an avid explorer and adventurer who served as team captain for the first American Women's Everest Expedition in 2002. Levine's energy and enthusiasm for going beyond normal expectations in all of our life's endeavors set the tone for this amazing convention. Levine stressed willpower as a person's most important piece of equipment in succeeding in life. She is the founder of the Climb High Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to training women in third-world countries to be trekking guides and porters, which therefore empowers them and improves their lives.
